Inclusive Remote Onboarding Microlearning

A WCAG-aware concept for helping new remote employees make better first-week decisions about priorities, communication, and support.

Case study

The challenge

Remote onboarding often spreads essential guidance across meetings, messages, documents, and policy pages. New employees can end up unsure what matters first, where to ask questions, and how to communicate efficiently.

The response

This concept narrows onboarding to a practical first-week problem space. The module uses concise content and scenario-based interaction to support correct decisions rather than passive information consumption.

Learning objectives

  • Identify first-week priorities.
  • Choose the right communication channel.
  • Route support requests efficiently.
  • Apply basic remote-work expectations.

Assessment design

The assessment uses branching and mini-scenarios rather than only multiple-choice questions, so the learner has to apply judgment in realistic situations.

Accessibility choices

Controls are labelled, focus states are visible, text contrast is strong, and all key actions are designed with large targets and keyboard access in mind.

Foundations for first-week communication

Know your main channels

This screen introduces the core channels you’ll use in your first week, with a short explanation of what each is typically used for. The goal is to help you recognize where to look and how to reach out.

  • Email: Longer, more formal messages, summaries, and follow-up notes.
  • Team chat: Quick questions, status updates, and informal check-ins.
  • Video calls: 1:1 conversations, team meetings, and complex topics that need discussion.
  • Support channels: Issues with tools, access, or systems that need technical help.

Scenario-based assessment

You have a meeting in 20 minutes.

You open the agenda and realize a linked tool will not load. You need the tool to prepare for the meeting. You are not sure whether to message the team, contact IT, or wait until the meeting starts.

This mockup uses semantic headings, labelled navigation, a skip link, visible focus styles, and touch-friendly controls to support a WCAG-aware portfolio presentation.
